India has been rated as one of the fast growing economies among the third world countries. As economy is growing fast, the gap between rich and poor has also been widening. Statistics released by one of the notable NGOs in India says that there are 60 million families which are living below poverty line, among them women and children constitutes larger population.
As we have stated in our cover page, Education is Wealth to the Poor. But it is unfortunate that the Education has been commercialized so that the poorest of the poor families could not afford for quality education.
State of India’s Children.
• Half of India's children are deprived of their fundamental right to education.
• At 17 million, India is home to world’s largest population of child labourers (this is the
official figure, activists claim the actual number is closer to four fold).
• Less than half of India’s children between the age 6 and 14 go to school.
• 60 million Indian children under the age of 6 live below the poverty line
• Every second child is malnourished
• Children of 100 million families live without water at home
• 10,000 children die every single day in India. More than in any tsunami, flood,
earthquake, famine or war.
Status of Children in Tiruvannamalai District.
• As the livelihood options for parents are diminishing the children are forced to leave
schools in order to search for jobs in Tiruvannamalai, Polur, Arani (towns).
• Hence, migration of rural children to towns is on increase.
• As per the State Government of Tamil Nadu, there are 1427 Child Labourers. (Boys :
795, Girls : 632) in Tiruvannamalai district.
• Civil societies say that there are more child labourers in the district than estimated by the
government.
• School dropout rate is alarming as 35% at Primary school and 65% at the High
school level.
Under these circumstances the role of Ramu Reddiar School in Karungalikuppam has been very
important for enabling the Children from poor families to avail education.
Karungallikuppam is a small village. The school gets students from 14 villages in and around Karungalikuppam covering a population of 18000. Reddiar and Vanniyar community people are landowners and the Dalit community people work for them as daily wage laborers. Our school plays a prominent role for providing education facilities for Dalit children, as our priority is children from poor families
